Songs About Virginia, The Old Dominion State

The state song is "Carry Me Back To Old Virginia" by James Bland. The song was a national hit in the early years of the recording industry with the title "Carry Me Back To Old Virginy" by Les Spencer (1893) and Alma Gluck (1915). Since over half the state is covered with forests, mountain themes and natural beauty play into many songs about Virginia. It also played a crucial role in the formation of the United States.

Eight U.S. Presidents came from Virgina, which was the first established European colony in North America in 1607, commissioned by the London Company. Earlier Native American inhabitants included Algoniquian, Siouan and Iroquoi tribes. Although Virginia became one of the first 13 states, it split into two states during the Civil War as West Virginia sided with the North and Virgina joined the South. Historically Virginia built its economy on agriculture. In the 21st century it has become a leader in computer chip technology.
