Tennessee has 9 state songs with the most popular being "Tennessee Waltz" by Redd Stewart and Pee Wee King. The song was a national hits several times by different artists: Pee Wee King (1948), Patti Page (1950), Guy Lombardo (1951), Les Paul & Mary Ford (1951), Jo Stafford (1951), Spike Jones (1951), Fontaine Sisters (1951) and Sam Cooke (1964). It also became a country music standard. Spanish settlers found the region in the 16th century then the land was ruled by the British in the 18th century. President Teddy Roosevelt credited the Watauga Association for setting up the first independent government in America, which oversaw Tennessee prior to the American Revolution. Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the 17th state in 1796. It was the birthplace of President Andrew Jackson and home of many popular music performers such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison. Nashville became established as the country music capitol of the world following the success of the Grand Ole Opry, which was founded in 1925. It's a weekly concert that has been broadcast on radio since the 1920s.
