The state song is "Beautiful Nebraska" by Jinm Fras. Nebraska can most vividly be characterized by its farms, ranches and deserts. Various Native American tribes in the region included Sioux, Omaha, Otoe, Missouria, Ponca and Pawnee. The region became part of the U.S. via the Louisiana Purchase from France. The federal government granted free land to homesteaders in the 1860s, who took advantage of the area's favorable agricultural conditions. At the Missouri River the state is promotes itself as "Where the West Begins."
