The state song is "Go Mississippi" by Houston Davis. The state has many forests and farms. It was named after the Mississippi River by the Ojibwe tribe. Other tribes in the region included Chicasaw and Choctaw. The French began settling in the area in the late 17th century. Known as New Louisiana, land was part of the Louisiana Purchase. Prior to the Civil War the state was known for cotton plantations. Natural disasters such as Katrina in 2005 and flooding have hurt the state financially.
