Songs About Kentucky, The Bluegrass State


The state song is "My Old Kentucky Home" by Stephen C. Foster. The song was a national hit several times by different artists in the early years of the recording industry : Edison Male Quartet (1898), Haydu Quartet (1903), Harry Mcdonough (1906), Geraldine Farrar (1910), Alma Gluck (1916), Columbia Stellar Quartet (1918) and Lucy Gates (1918). Other themes written about Kentucky include livestock, horse racing and bourbon distilleries. The Kentucky Derby is an annual horse race every May in Louisville. Kentucky is an Iroqoi word that means "meadow lands." The land has survived tornadoes and flooding.
