An extensive history of the Sacamento music scene can be found at Tangent Sunset. It covers several decades of local artists rising to the national spotlight as solo artists or in bands. Sometimes local artists have joined existing national bands from other origins, such as Craig Chaquico joining Starship, Timothy B. Schmit joining The Eagles or Jackie Greene joining The Black Crowes. Below is a summary of the city's history as far as local acts that went national. In some cases a national act such as Sal Valentino of The Beau Brummels has moved to the Sacramento region after becoming established from another region.
There were hundreds of other local acts as well that became well known regionally or involved with national touring even if they were not signed to a major label. Essentially, the capital city has only been in the national music spotlight since the 1980s, but occasionally earlier acts did make the national charts. There was a surge in local scene ambition particularly in the 1990s with the signings of Cake, Deftones, Oleander and Papa Roach, who each had big hits on the national rock and alternative charts.
