Number One By Far
The programming team of PD Dr. Dave Ferguson and MD Chuck Fields produced amazing results in the early 90s as in double digit market leadership. The station remained the top "contemporary hit radio" reporter from Sacramento to the national trade publications, although it keep its sound streamlined with a tight list of dance music more in the vein of hip hop and slow jamz.
No other music station in town came close to the consistent top ratings (double digit 12+ numbers) posted by FM 102 throughout the first half of the decade. Competition became scarce after Hot 97 KROY flipped to the Eagle in 1990 and KWOD started playing around with alternative music in 1991 and ultimately abandoning the top 40 format a few years later, leaving FM 102 all alone at the top, at least until competition appeared later in the decade.
