Local Los Angeles Music Scene


Los Angeles is one of the three major music cities in America and is the home of some of the best known artists of the music world. It is the home of many music revolutions. One of the most legendary artists in the history of the L.A. music scene has been The Beach Boys, who led the surf trend then studio experimentation with early multi-track recording such as "Good Vibrations." They also were an influence on the Beatles and many other acts in the sixties.

The Byrds also experimented with electric folk. Later in the decade The Doors experimented with poetry and psychedelic imagery. In the 70s L.A. gave us mellow rock artists such as The Eagles, Jackson Browne and Fleetwood Mac as well as arena bands such as Van Halen then in the 80s Metallica, Motley Crue and Guns N' Roses. In the 90s Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against The Machine helped usher in a wave of rap/rock.

Other notable acts from the region include The Doors, The Righteous Brothers, Three Dog Night, Steppenwolf, Black Eyed Peas, Tool, Seeds, Turtles, Missing Persons, Oingo Boingo, Jane's Addiction, Porno For Pyros, Mary Jane Girls, Tone Loc, Beck, The Knack, Audioslave, Megadeth, 30 Seconds To Mars, Bill Withers, Bread, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Go-Go's, Canned Heat, Crazy Town, Dada, Ice T, Maroon 5, Montell Jordan, Crystal Method, Sara Bareilles, Ricki Lee Jones, Bangles, System of a Down, Quiet Riot, Silversun Pickups, Brothers Johnson, The Coasters, The Carpenters, The Monkees, Grass Roots, Platters and Strawberry Alarm Clock.

Broke L.A. is a homegrown independent music festival that celebrated its 8th year the weekend of September 21, 2018. Acts included Sizzy Rocket, Robookid, CAPYAC, The Wave, Atsuko Okatsuka and Jackie Fabulous. The two-day event featured three stages with over 50 musical acts and 40 comedians.

Ozomatli have been a leading Los Angeles area band since their first album in 1998. They play a wide range of music that includes Latin, hip hop and rock. One of the themes of the band is that they promote workers rights in the Latino community. The band went on an international tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department in 2006. Since that time the band has been involved with several symphony performances, including the Boston Pops 125th Aniversary.

Sara Haze has been singing all her life and writing catchy songs that deliver powerful messages. Her song uplifting and melodic song "Beautiful Day" is one of many examples that demonstrates her ability to create music worthy of everlasting recognition. She gained widespread attention when the MTV reality show The Hills used her song "My Own Hands To Hold" in a scene. One of her best known songs is "Lovely," which deals with inadequacy felt by girls.

In September 2014 Pasadena Now reported that Los Angeles housing development company Thomas Safran and Associates (TSA) raised $98,866 for the Hillsides Pasadena campus to fund a carnival for children that included music, games and food. The company, which manages over 5,000 units of affordable housing throughout the state, raised the money through a variety of efforts such as a benefit dinner, community silent auction and trike-a-thon. Mini-music clubs were booming in LA, according to an LA Times article on February 4, 2016. The Resident in LA's arts district served as a tribute gathering for David Bowie fans in January after opening a month earlier. Such small clubs that hold 300 or less and doing well in the local scene. Venues mentioned include Lost Room, Mid-City's Union, the Echo, the Bootleg, the Satellite, the Viper Room and Hi-Hat. Part of the boom is that many small venues have been revamped.

Remedy Through Music is a music therapy group run by USC students who perform at L.A. area hospitals and assisted living centers. The student group strives to use their musical talents to bring comfort to patients who need support in the community. The group usually performs once per week, as reported by the Daily Trojan in March 2017. Musical genres range from Bach to The Beatles. Many of the students involved with the project are majoring in either science or health-related studies.
