Gainesville Local Music Scene History

In late 2019 the Gainseville Sun ran a three-part series of stories on local music scene history from the mid-2000s through the present. The article identified the three biggest local acts that have gone far as Hot Water Music, Less Than Jake and Against Me!

Less Than Jake began their career as a punk band in the early nineties in Gainesville. On Labor Day Weekend 2015 they headlined the fourth annual Wake 'n' Bake Weekend at the High Dive in Downtown Gainesville. Other bands included the Supervillains, Kash'd Out and Mrs. Skannotto. The show prepared the band for a world tour that included stops in Japan and Australia.

Snarkland is a local entertainment scene website. One of the pages lists several acts who have helped define the Gainesville music scene. Memorable acts include Family Tree, NDolphin and Aleka's Attic. The site has a rich history of blogs by Haldecraft going back to 2006. Even though Gainesville has no distinctive sound, it can be summarized as a region with eclectic tastes. Esquire Magazine published an article once about the top 10 cities that rock and Gainesville as listed at number five.

Indie Gainesville is a local scene website that includes a non-profit community based internet radio station called Grow Radio, located in Gainesville. The station is produced by volunteers and plays original local music not normally heard on terrestrial radio. IndieGainesville was designed to support local independent businesses. The site does not have a leader, as its decision making is determined by an independent collective democracy.

MusikGarten is program designed for children. The program includes instruction on instrumentation and visual art. Deeper workshops are offered on music theory and songwriting.
