Tom Petty's Early Airplay: Interview with Jon Scott
Author Jon Scott of the 2018 book Tom Petty and Me joined Alex Cosper and Sam Cadura on the new Playlist Research podcast called Social Music Talk on Saturday afternoon, February 23, 2019. The discussion focused on the career of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, along with Jon's background how he went from a freeform rock jock at FM100 in Memphis to doing music industry promotion.
One of Jon's early projects on MCA was Tom Petty's first signed band Mudcrutch. Jon promoted Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers when they moved to ABC Records then to MCA after it bought ABC. The conversation spanned Petty's career at both MCA and
Warner Brothers. It was Jon's promotional efforts to get "Breakdown" played on Los Angeles radio that secured the band's place in rock and roll history. From there Petty enjoyed a string of hits and huge selling albums.
At the band's final show at the Hollywood Bowl on their 40th anniversary tour, Tom Petty dedicated the song "I Won't Back Down" to Jon Scott, thanking him for getting the band's first hit "Breakdown" on the radio.
