Vietnam War Playlist

American advisors had been stationed in South Vietnam since World War II. Although President Kennedy signed an order to bring advisors home a month before in death in November 1963, President Johnson immediately reversed the order shortly after taking office. By that point there were 16,000 American advisors in Vietnam.

Following the Gulf of Tonkin incident in August 1964, a supposed bombing attack on U.S. submarines that never happened, according Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, Johnson began escalating troops to defend South Vietnam against communists in North Vietnam.

The war turned out to be very unpopular, leading many young men to become "draft dodgers," fleeing to Canada during the war. Nixon was narrowly elected in 1968 on the promise of a "secret plan" to end the war with "peace and honor." The war continued through the end of his term. While campaigning for re-election in 1972, Nixon announced a month before the election that peace was at hand. After his re-election troops began returning home, yet military activity continued even after Nixon resigned in disgrace due to the Watergate scandal.

Watergate was not just about Republicans spying on the Democratic headquarters at the Watergate Hotel during the 1972 election. Part of why the spying took place was to see what type of dirt Democrats had on Nixon regarding secret illegal bombings in Southeast Asia, which were revealed by Nixon aide Daniel Ellsberg.

Here are some of the songs that were popular during the Vietnam War (1963-1975) that commented on the war that was never approved by Congress.
