2000s Music Industry Statistics
Pop Music was a top 5 genre throughout the 2000s, according to data from Peter Hart Research and Taylor Research & Consulting Group, as reported on RIAA.com in the RIAA's 2008 Consumer Profile. It was the number two genre behind Rock in 2001 with 12.1 market share. But for the rest of the decade it fell below an 11 share, dipping as low as 7.1 in 2006, then rebounding to 10.7 and 9.1 the next two years. Besides Rock, the other genres that outrank Pop are Rap/Hip-hop, R&B/Urban and Country.
