Music Industry Statistics


In 2006 the size of the U.S. music industry in terms of shipments from manufacturers to music retail outlets fell from $12.3 billion to $11.7 billion, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was one of the few years of the decade, besides 2000 and 2005, in which males spent more than females on music. The top genres of 2006 with respective market shares as ranked by the RIAA Consumer Profile were:

1. Rock (34.0)
2. Country (13.0)
3. Rap/Hip-Hop (11.4)
4. R&B/Urban (11.0)
5. Pop (7.1)
