In 2005 the size of the U.S. music industry in terms of shipments from manufacturers to music retail outlets fell from $12.345 billion to $12.297 billion, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The top genres of 2005 with respective market shares as ranked by the RIAA Consumer Profile were:

1. Rock (31.5)
2. Rap/Hip-Hop (13.3)
3. Country (12.5)
4. R&B/Urban (10.2)
5. Pop (8.1)
