In 2004 the size of the U.S. music industry in terms of shipments from manufacturers to music retail outlets rose from $11.8 billion to $12.3 billion, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The top genres of 2004 with respective market shares as ranked by the RIAA Consumer Profile were:

1. Rock (23.9)
2. Country (13.0)
3. Rap/Hip-Hop (12.1)
4. R&B/Urban (11.3)
5. Pop (10.0)
