Music Industry Statistics
In 2002 the size of the U.S. music industry in terms of shipments from manufacturers to music retail outlets fell from $13.7 billion to $12.6 billion, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was the first of a series of years in which the sales channel of brick and mortar record stores began to drop off as internet sales began to become noticeable.
The top genres of 2002 with respective market shares as ranked by the RIAA Consumer Profile were:
1. Rock (24.7)
2. Rap/Hip-Hop (13.8)
3. R&B/Urban (11.2)
4. Country (10.5)
5. Pop (12.1)
