In 2000 the size of the U.S. music industry in terms of shipments from manufacturers to music retail outlets fell from $14.6 billion to $14.3 billion, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The top genres of 2000 with respective market shares as ranked by the RIAA Consumer Profile were:

1. Rock (24.8)
2. Rap/Hip-Hop (12.9)
3. Pop (11.0)
4. Country (10.7)
5. R&B/Urban (9.7)
