The 2014 World Cup was held in Rio de Janeiro. at the Maracana. Shakira performed at the closing ceremony with Carlinhos Brown, Carlos Santana and Ivete Sangalo following the championship in which Germany defeated Argentina. Russian President Vladimir Putin and singer Rihanna were seen in the crowd, watching as spectators. It was Shakira's third World Cup performance the past decade. While most of the world refers to this event as a football tournament, Americans often refer to it as a soccer championship so that it isn't confused with American football or the Super Bowl. The first glabal tournament was held in Glasgow in 1872. FIFA, also known as the International Federation of Association Football, was launched in 1904 and ten years later began participating in Olympic football tournaments. In 1930 FIFA kicked off the event now known as the World Cup. |
