The series only lasted three seasons, but it went on to become one of the most popular show of all time as reruns. It became so popular it created a cult that supported annual conventions and mass marketing campaigns. The series also led to a series of blockbuster motion pictures and later TV spinoffs. Originally created by Gene Roddenberry, the science fiction TV series initially ran on NBC, but the reruns were acquired by CBS. The cast included William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. In many ways the show influenced tech developers, who remain huge supporters of the multi-million dollar franchise.
