by Alex Cosper (12/17/12) Sacramento Union, August 9, 1974 President Richard M. Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974 after he consulted with fellow Republicans that he had lost support from Congress over the Watergate cover-up scandal, which assured that he was headed for impeachment. Nixon's problems escalated when he fired the special Watergrate prosecutor and later refused to comply with Justice Department demands to release the tape recordings he secretly made of White House conversations. These tapes later revealed that Nixon conspired with others to talk about "hush" money to thwart the investigation on a burglary of the Democratic Party headquarters at the Watergate Hotel in Florida during the 1972 election. For the "week ending August 10, 1974" on the Billboard Hot 100 a song about Nixon called "You Haven't Done Nothin'" by Stevie Wonder jumped from 93 to 51 in its second week. The song eventually hit #1 the first week of November. Another song on the chart at the time about Nixon and Watergate was "Fish Ain't Bitin'" by Lamont Dozier. Later in the month Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alamabama," which mentioned Watergate, moved from 72 to 56 in its third week. The song made the top 10 in October and became a classic rock staple.
