Music the Week Elvis Presley First Hit Number One
by Alex Cosper (12/22/12)

Elvis Presley's first national release on RCA Victor, "Heartbreak Hotel" was a winner, topping the Billboard's pop chart, then called The Top 100 for the May 5, 1956 issue. His previous recordings since 1954 had been issued by an independent company from Memphis, Sun Records. By the time Elvis hit the top, the charts were already filled with several rock and roll as well as rhythm and blues hits, whereas "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley had been more revolutionary for its time the previous year. "Heartbreak Hotel" became the first of 18 number one hits for Elvis.
