The state song is "North Dakota Hymn" by James W. Foley and Dr. C.S. Putnam. North Dakota has a sparse population, with the largest city being Fargo, which the American Lung Associated ranked as America's cleanest city in 2009. The state's economy has been stronger than others during the 2010s recession due to its booming oil fields. State themes are the Great Plains, Badlands, the Missouri River, hills, tornadoes, thunderstorms, buttes and grassland. Weather can be extreme, as the state ranks among both the hottest and coldest places in America. North Dakota became a state following the Louisiana Purchase.
