Pat Martin and Radio Longevity

Not many radio personalities last a long time at one station. Sacramento's rock stations KRXQ and KSEG have been the best at hanging on to air talent. Under Station Manager Jim Fox, Pat Martin programs the music, decides on new music and has been doing the same airshift at the same station longer than anyone else in Sacramento. He has been doing middays at KRXQ since August 1988.

In 2010 Pat Martin reveals the secret to his longevity: "IÕm constantly evolving and know how to be a role player. IÕve been the PD here a couple of times, then not the PD. I donÕt self-implode, just roll with the changes. But mainly IÕve made myself, by design, a valuable air talent for KRXQ. I know that every day I have to re-prove myself and earn my place here, and thatÕs what I do. It also helps to have heritage at a station. The listeners consider me a friend, a familiar voice they can tune into day after day. ItÕs a comfort level with the audience thatÕs hard to duplicate."

More than anything else, Martin enjoys the freedom that the station allows him to have, which is something that is as equally as rare as radio longevity these days. Pat says, "IÕm allowed to do the radio show I want to do, with literally no restrictions. Jim encourages all of us to do the best radio we can and allows us complete freedom. ItÕs also nice to know that heÕs a big fan of my air work. I really enjoy growing as an air talent each and every day, and that motivates me."

Other long-term radio vets have been Tom Nakashima, Bob Keller and Kat Maudru at KSEG The Eagle, who have all been on Sacramento radio for decades. KRXQ's morning show Rob, Arnie and Dawn, has been around since the mid 90s. Lynda Clayton held the midday show at KSSJ until the station dropped the Smooth Jazz format in 2010. Pat Still, who formerly worked at KZAP, has been a morning host at KNCI since 1992.
