The above genres represent pages that have useful musical information and sample playlists. If you would like to share your playlists on Playlist Research.com send an email here.

Development of the basic genres of pop, rock, soul and country evolved over many decades. Classical and jazz music have loyal followings but usually attract a single digit share of the market, according to RIAA statistics. While rock has consistently been the leading genre in sales, the leading music formats on FM radio over the 2000s have been adult contemporary and country, according to M Street Corps and Inside Radio reports.

Hip hop has dominated the top 40 charts since the early 90s. Rock has held a steady market share not from dominating the media spotlight. Rock sales can be understood as part of the big middle instead of the top of the pyramid. By 2011 big name rock artists were scarce on Billboard's year-end album chart, but rock from the indie world started becoming more of a factor.
