Playlist Research a resource for music researchers About Music Eras Radio Articles Contact Music Industry Statistics 2008 In 2008 the size of the U.S. music industry in terms of shipments from manufacturers to music retail outlets fell from $10.4 billion to $8.5 billion, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Significant gains in the 40-44 and 45+ demographics occurred while all other younger demos declined in 2008. Internet sales and downloads continued to rise at the expense of CDs. The top genres of 2008 with respective market shares as ranked by the RIAA Consumer Profile were: 1. Rock (31.8) 2. Country (11.9) 3. Rap/Hip-Hop (10.7) 4. R&B/Urban (10.2) 5.
