U2 and Apple partnered for an unprecedented promotion in which the tech giant paid the band upfront to make their album Songs of Innocence available free to iTunes users for a month leading up to the official October 14 release for sale. The exclusing deal with Apple was announced on September 9, 2014 at an Apple event and the songs were made available that day to over 500,000 iTunes users. In October it was reported that 26 million fans had downloaded all the tracks while a total of 81 million users check out some of the tracks.
2014 is Slow Year for Music Sales
Music sales in almost all configurations have been slower than unusual in 2014 compared with previous years, based on Nielsen Soundscan reports. As of October only one album, The Frozen Soundtrack, had crossed over a million units in sales. The album reflects the popularity of the Disney film.
